Meet Coach Doug Saylor
Doug Saylor, director of Hoop Life Academy and author of Hoop Life:
The Basketball Player’s Max Potential Handbook, enjoyed a successful high school career in Pennsylvania
that included All-District honors twice, All-
State, Honorable-Mention All-American and selection
as one of the top point guards in Pennsylvania, earning him a start in the prestigious
Dapper Dan Roundball Classic.
Doug is currently the Program Director of Above the Rim, a one-of-a-kind
training facility located in Madisonville, Louisiana. He over sees both individual and group training
in a state-of-the-art gym that offers students a full-size high school gym that is fully
air conditioned with top of the line Flat Screen Video Monitors and a Premium Sound System,
Maple Wood Floor With Shock Absorbers, and Live Video Game Feed with ten Large Flat Monitors.
After earning a full scholarship at Louisiana State University, Doug
established a single game assist record with 14 assists as a freshman point guard. Following his
college basketball career, he earned a B.S. degree and graduated in 1978. Desiring to help
young athletes reach their potential, he added a Master of Education in Human Performance
& Health Promotion along with a concurrent certification as a Health and Physical Education
teacher. He is also a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, CPR & First Aid
Certified and has nine years of teaching experience in the St. Tammany Parish School System.
Doug has worked as a player development specialist for the
past decade, training young beginners as well as seasoned college and NBA players.
Encouraged by those he has trained, he wrote the book “HoopLife,” which was published
in January 2008 by Coaches Choice. In it Doug shares his early experiences, his
development as a player, and his philosophy of training the whole player.
Doug worked with Greg Monroe the 6’ 10” winner of the Morgan Wooden
National High School Basketball Players of the Year award for the 2008 McDonald’s All-American
team as well as LSU players Darrell Mitchell, Garrett Temple, Damall Lazare and Tasmin
Mitchell helping each player to develop all phases of their game.
